Shoshin (an open mind)

An open mind

The ancient story is told of the young hopeful who went to see a famous teacher, seeking to be accepted as a student.  The two sat down to talk over tea.

The young one was full of ideas, theories and suggestions.

Without saying a word, the teacher began pouring more tea into his guests already brimming cup, spilling it all over the floor.

“Why do you do this, can you not see that the cup is already full?”, cried the visitor.

“Like this cup”, replied the host, “your mind is also full.  you must first empty it before we can begin”.
